The right coupling depends on torque, speed, misalignment, environment and whether you need backlash-free or vibration damping.
For low-medium torque, light misalignment, vibration damping — jaw (spider) coupling with elastomer insert. Best general-purpose choice.
For high torque, higher misalignment — gear coupling (GICL / GIICL series). Standard on rolling mills, large pumps.
For precision drives, zero backlash — disc or diaphragm coupling. Higher cost but no wear, no lubrication.
For large parallel-shaft offset — Oldham coupling. Common on encoder / stepper shafts.
For two non-aligned axes — universal joint (Cardan). Accepts large angular offset.
Jaw coupling for low-to-medium torque, light misalignment, vibration damping. Gear coupling for high torque and larger misalignment. Most pumps, fans and small motors use jaw coupling; heavy machinery uses gear coupling.
