Two bearing families cover most industrial shafts: tapered roller bearings and deep groove ball bearings. They look different but the real question buyers ask is “which one fits my application?” This guide gives a fast answer.
Deep groove ball bearing handles mostly radial load with a small axial allowance. It is the universal “default” bearing because it is cheap, runs at high speed and tolerates a small amount of misalignment.
Tapered roller bearing handles combined radial + heavy axial load in both directions (when mounted in pairs, O-arrangement or X-arrangement). It is the workhorse for gearboxes, wheel hubs and pinion shafts.
Deep groove ball bearings win at high RPM — typical limiting speeds of 10,000–15,000 rpm for small series, lower for larger sizes. Tapered roller bearings run slower, typically 3,000–7,000 rpm depending on series.
Deep groove ball: tolerates 2–10 arc-minutes of misalignment depending on series. Tapered roller: very sensitive — even 1 arc-minute of misalignment adds edge loading and shortens life. Always mount paired tapered roller bearings in a matched set.
Pure radial load, high speed — deep groove ball. Heavy radial + axial load, lower speed, paired mounting — tapered roller. If unsure, send the application (load, speed, direction, alignment) to your supplier and they will recommend the series.
